Thanksgiving Tips for Seniors

Thanksgiving can be a wonderful time to connect with loved ones and enjoy the holiday spirit. Here are some tips tailored to seniors to ensure they have a safe, enjoyable, and meaningful Thanksgiving.

Plan Ahead: From rides, to dietary restrictions, to comfy seating, it’s best to think ahead for Thanksgiving visits.

  • For older guests who don’t drive, make sure to set up rides for pick up or drop off. This will remove stress from the holiday!

  • Ask ahead for dietary restrictions as nuts and other allergy prone foods are often found during Thanksgiving feasts. A trip to the ER should not be on the menu

  • Seats can be made more comfortable with cushions. Uncluttered walkways help prevent tripping hazards!

Mindful Eating: Thanksgiving has a reputation for overeating and lazily lying on the couch. There’s some other things we can do to not overeat, upset our stomachs, and feel great the next day.

  • Practice slower, mindful eating, making sure to drink plenty of water while eating.

  • Moderate your intake of alcohol, and offer festive mocktails for a seasonal alternative!

  • Head out for a walk, or do a couple laps around the house if the weather is not cooperating. Stretching or chair yoga positions are great for digestion!

Encourage Gratitude and Reflection: Foster an atmosphere of gratitude and reflection.

  • Encourage everyone to share what they are thankful for, creating a warm and inclusive environment.

  • Thanksgiving is about fostering connections and making cherished memories. By being considerate of everyone’s needs and preferences, you can ensure they have a delightful and meaningful Thanksgiving celebration.
