Big changes are coming to Western New York’s Medicare landscape in 2026.
Several major carriers, including Highmark, Independent Health, and select UnitedHealthcare plans, will not be renewing coverage starting January 1, 2026.
If you currently have one of these plans, you’ll need to choose new Medicare coverage before the end of this year to avoid a lapse in benefits.
Here’s what to do next:
1. Don’t Panic — But Don’t Wait
If your plan is ending, you’ll receive a non-renewal notice from your insurance provider. You’ll still have coverage through the end of 2025, but you’ll need to select a new plan that begins January 1, 2026.
2. Know Your Special Enrollment Options
Because your plan is ending, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) — giving you the ability to choose a new plan without penalty.
3. Review Your Current Health Needs
Take this as an opportunity to review your:
Prescription drug list 💊
Preferred doctors 🩺
Budget for premiums & copays 💵
