2026 Medicare Open Enrollment Is Here: What Western New York Medicare Beneficiaries Need to Know

October 15 marks the beginning of Medicare Open Enrollment, and if you have Medicare, now is the time to take a closer look at your coverage for 2027.

Medicare plans can change from year to year, including premiums, copays, covered services, prescription drug coverage, provider networks, and participating pharmacies. Plan choices can also vary by where you live in Western New York.

That’s why it’s important not to simply assume your current plan is still the best fit for you.

What should you do during Open Enrollment?

From October 15 through December 7, Medicare beneficiaries can review their coverage and make changes for the coming year. Depending on your current coverage, you may be able to switch Medicare Advantage plans, change your Part D prescription drug plan, or switch between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare. Changes generally take effect January 1.

As you review your options, take a look at:

  • Your medications: Are all of your prescriptions still covered, and what will you pay?

  • Your doctors and specialists: Are your preferred providers still in your plan’s network?

  • Your pharmacy: Is your preferred pharmacy still participating?

  • Your costs: Look at premiums, deductibles, copays and other out-of-pocket expenses.

  • Your healthcare needs: Have your medications, doctors, treatments or health needs changed?

  • Your plan's Annual Notice of Change: This document outlines important changes to your current plan for the coming year.

Changes in Western New York

Medicare options can change locally from one year to the next. For example, for 2026, New York had 218 Medicare Advantage plans available, compared with 241 in 2025, demonstrating why it's important to review the options available in your specific area rather than assuming your current coverage will remain the best choice.

Your Medicare coverage is personal—and the right choice depends on your doctors, prescriptions, budget and healthcare needs.
